On Thursday, President Trump announced that he would issue an executive order to get around the Supreme Court ruling that shot down his administration's quest for a citizenship question on the 2020 census.

While much of the mainstream media was expecting President Trump to issue an executive order that would illegally add the citizenship question to the census, Attorney General Bill Barr reaffirmed that,

"This has never been under consideration."

Rather than fight the lengthy court battle that would assuredly conclude in not getting the information the administration wants; they decided to issue an executive order that directs the Commerce Department to take action. The Commerce Department is now allowed to obtain data on American citizenship through numerous means including the Department of Homeland Security as well as the Social Security Administration.

The Census Bureau can already collect citizenship records from the IRS, Social Security Administration, the State Department, and the US Citizenship and Immigration services. The idea is to combine all of the records from each department to sort out who is and isn't a citizen in the United States without having to directly ask the question on the next census.

Beyond avoiding the court battle the Trump administration can also save a decent amount of taxpayer dollars by not amending the census forms directly. The cost of adding the question to the census could be over $27 million rather than about $2 million to collect all the records from the various agencies.

Another positive to the executive order, according to the administration is that they will get more complete and informative data from the current records they have on file rather than ask the citizenship question on the census. The Census Bureau has told the administration that asking the citizenship question could make illegal immigrants avoid participation in the census, thus leading to a less accurate count.

Even though President Trump had to go an alternate route to get the information they want, he made sure to let his supporters know that,

"Today we are here to tell you that we are not backing down in our effort to determine the citizenship status of the United States population."

Also that, "We will leave no stone unturned."

It's too soon to tell if this is a win for the Trump team or for the Democrats. The only thing that is for certain is that regardless of what the left throws Trump's way, he can always spin it back and turn it into a win for him and a win for his base.
